Getting SSH Access to TORVALDS

Information

Direct access to TORVALDS and other Dept of Computer Science Linux servers is available from off and on campus through SSH. This document will explain how to obtain a free client for SSH and use it for this access. This is not meant to be a comlete explanation of Secure Shell but only intended as a guide to help you get it up and running.

Getting an Installing SSH

Linux

If you are using a distribution of linux, they typically come with a version of SSH as well as Konqueror or some other client to use for SFTP drag and drop file transfers.

Windows

For Windows, the best bet for an SSH client is PuTTY which is a free implementation of telnet and SSH for windows. Version 0.60 of putty is also available from here. This is the most recent version as of 2008-01-09 so you may want to check the site for a more recent version.

If you need a GUI for SFTP, then there are two recommended clients WinSCP or Filezilla. Both are good clients for SFTP or FTP and are drag 'n drop in the Windows environment.

We are no longer offering the download to a SSH client since the free version is no longer support by SSH.
